Hawaii GET/Business License Registration & Taxes
In Hawaii, businesses must acquire a GET (General Excise Tax) license, also known as a “business license”. While Hawaii doesn't have a traditional sales tax, all goods and services sold are subject to the GET. Businesses must collect 4.712% on retail goods and services and 0.5% on wholesale paid to the State of Hawaii Department of Taxation.
What is the difference between sales tax and GET?
The GET differs from a sales tax because a sales tax is a tax on customers whereas GET is a tax on businesses. Businesses are required to collect sales tax from their customers whereas businesses are not required to collect GET from their customers. It is common for businesses to charge their customers GET by visibly passing it on to the customer. Businesses must pay GET to the state of Hawaii whether or not they choose to charge GET to customers.
